  • Sorry I don’t have a quote but I was reading all these other quotes on here and about half of them are BS, I’ve been a cowboy my whole life and when I was growing up we said our yes sir/mam and held the door open for women and old cowboys and cowgirls. So when I say that just because you own a pair of boots, spurs, a hat, drive a truck, or just have a horse doesn’t mean your a cowboy. People who walk around saying their cowboys and don’t have anything to back it up with make us real cowboys look bad. Oh and by the way JUST because you ride bulls doesn’t make you a cowboy, not once have I ever been asked “Hey man do you think you could come over some time and break my bull for me”. It’s stupid and you’re not a cowboy. Anyway that’s just my two cents.

  • Alright this is ridiculous to answer to all the buckle bunnies and saddle clubers being a cowboy has nothing to do with the horse you ride, boots or hat you wear, or quote you stole off the internet. Being a cowboy is not what you do, it’s who you are. It’s a state of mind. Now you get this state of mind not from rodeo’in or riding your horse on a trail ride. It from breaking ice off the water tanks when it’s 20 below, Checking the herd at 2 am to keep the calves from freezing. Pulling calves in the middle of the night. Checking the creek to make sure you didn’t miss any. Feeding the horses on Christmas morning before sitting down to open gifts. You can’t be a cowboy without putting in the time. Yes most cowboys are gentlemen, but if you really think about the history of cowboys from the cattle drives, they weren’t all that great to be around. And to sum it up, y’all watch too much TV. Cause that’s the cowboys you dreaming about not the real deal.

  • The phrase ‘he’ll do to ride the river with’ comes from the trail drives. Often a river needed to be crossed is suddenly flooded with swift currents from flash floods many miles away. These can come up quite suddenly and a herd caught in one is in a lot of trouble. A cowboy who would go into such a whirling watery mess to help another rider is risking his own life to do so. Hence, if a cowboy will do that, he’s not only brave, but strong and loyal, a good friend. So if there’s someone in your life who you would trust with anything and everything, he’ll ‘do to ride the river with’.

  • A cowboy is a gentleman with or without his hat and boots.

  • ==============================

  • A cowboy is not boots, spurs, hat or a love for John Wayne. It is who you are inside. It is how you treat those around you. It is giving of yourself before you give to yourself. It is a smile that comes from your heart and a howdy that comes from your deeds. A rodeo ride isn’t a prerequisite nor is it a requirement to be a cowboy. It isn’t being able to quote Lonesome Dove or talking about the time you saw Garth Brooks in concert. A cowboy has an aura like no one else. A cowboy makes those around him stand in awe of his wisdom, wit and true grit. He holds his mates hand as well as their heart. He treasures what others take for granted. He steps up when others step down and picks up those who stumble around him. A TRUE cowboy is solid, grounded and a gift from God. That is something no item bought at Sheplers or driven of the lot of a dealership can make.

  • Well, I ain’t really got a quote that ain’t already been said. But I agree with True Cowboy.. I ain’t the most cliche cowboy, but I still say yes sir/yes maam to my momma, dad, an elders, along with ladies an gentlemen. I wear my boots, I dip an smoke, I ride an drive a truck, I take my hat off when I eat, I say grace, I tip my hat to women, and I don’t spit, cuss,er fight in front of a woman. But before I spend money on my truck er tobacco, er treat myself on sometin, ima work till I can’t work no more, treat my woman with the respect an love she deserves, tend to my animals, make sure the bills is paid, an give thanks to the Good Lord. THEN I might indulge in a little selfishness… All these comments bout “boots, spurs, cowboy hats make the cowboy” an such, well that ain’t nothin but talk. Till you learn to ride an die a good man, take care of yer kin, help yer neighbors and strangers, an still have enough in ya to be wild and free, then you ain’t got no room to talk.

  • ==============================

  • Being a cowboy ain’t about wearing your fancy spotless 50xx beaver hat or riding you horse on a manicured trail on the weekends. It’s about getting up all hours of the night to check cattle in the winter time and freezing your hands while you do it, and cutting trail through brush so thick you can’t see ten feet in front of you, it’s not about driving around in a big jacked up pickup being ignorant. It’s about holding doors for your elders and the ladies just like truecowboy says. Being a cowboy isn’t a job or a hobby that you can just pick up. It’s a life style that you live from the day you are born.

  • ==============================

  • A true cowboy knows love, pain, and shame but never cares about fame.

  • ==============================
  • I agree with Todd and everyone else who knows what a true cowboy is. They work 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 52 weeks out of the year. Real cowboys are out there in the dead of night and in the middle of winter making sure their cattle are alive and safe. They only treat themselves when they have done what needed to get done, paid what they needed to get paid, and most do a of that with one paycheck per year. Cowboys aren’t people wearing a cowboy hat, spurs, chaps, and ride horses for fun. Cowboys are men who work every day doing tasks that are demanding, and they don’t complain. They live life the way they want to and enjoy what it gives them no matter how hard the life is.

  • ==============================

  • There are cowboys and cowgirls out there who aren’t in the rodeo business like ranchers and farmers. You don’t have to rodeo to be a cowboy. Where I come from if you have to have a horse to do your job on a daily basis that makes you a cowboy, a true cowboy doesn’t have to show off their skills at a rodeo they just face their daily tasks. After all, the true cowboys from the past never participated in a rodeo.

  • ==============================
  • With a few years behind me, I know! Cowboys aren’t born. Cowboys are self made men. We are a product of what we choose to be. It isn’t the hat that makes the cowboy. It’s the cowboys that make the hat. You people are describing an image not a way of life. Country boys live in and enjoy the country. Cowboys live on a ranch and make a living out of it. Farmers live on a farm and make a living out of it. That’s why they call it country dancing and not cowboy dancing……so everyone can enjoy.

What we do shows through the pride we have in our work. The pride we have when our cattle slip in the sale ring on sale day. The quite pride we have when our horse cuts out a cow. We don’t boast or brag that ~we know more then the next guy. We may ~not have the best language around but I guarantee well stop and listen to an elder talk or open a door for a woman. We’ll talk to a child like he was our own. Our horse is God’s gift to us. We respect every aspect of this animal yet no boasting is necessary, we show through performance. Our pickup and trailer~ may not be the nicest but it’s ours and that’s enough for us. Whether we back into the box or open the gate to the pasture, we will always live a simple life with our lord to thank.

  • Just because you ride a horse doesn’t make you a COWGIRL or COWBOY. What’s important is that, no matter what, you are outside in any kind of weather taking care of your horses and/or cows. REAL cowboys and cowgirls aren’t scared to get a little dirt on their boots or hands. Getting dirty is part of being a cowgirl or cowboy. And ~just because you ride bulls or brake your horses, doesn’t make you one either. I’m country from the heart, and I’m proud of it.

  • ==============================

  • I pull my hat brim down, and look across this land, that my daddy had given to me. Wide open spaces, filled with trees and hills as far as the eye can see, as the sun rises, I say a thankful prayer, before my day comes to a start cause if you could see what I see, then you would know that God must be a cowboy at heart. As I wipe the sweat, form my brow, I can’t help to fell sad, for all those city folks, who seem to have it so bad. They can’t even walk down street without worrying if they’re gonna be robbed, stabbed or shot. I just can’t see how they do it, not knowing if they will make home or not. Yes sir I’m feeling ki~nda proud here on this land, where man knows his part, and now I can’t help but to grin, cause I know for sure.. That God is a cowboy by heart.

  • Mud on My Face , Dirt In My Hair, The Way I Barrel race Makes The Cowboys Stare! (: My Dad is World Champion Bareback Rider, And he dang sure is a Cowboy.

  • If you ain’t God or George Strait, take your boots off.

  • ==============================

  • What do you call 47 millionaires watching the super bowl on tv? The Dallas Cowboys

  • ==============================

  • I’d gladly trade 8 seconds for a lifetime of watching from the stands.

  • ==============================

  • A cowboy can neva be careful until he buys a white horse and a white hat…

  • ==============================

  • Country isn’t where your from, it’s who you are. Saddle Up. Shut Up. Hold Tight. American by birth, cowgirl by choice.

  • ==============================

  • A true cowboy is a guy who stands up for any country/cowgirl in the bar or anywhere. He always makes time for his lady. Through rain or snow or even drought he goes and finds his cattle.

  • ==============================

  • From the time the sun rises to the time it sets, you can find a cowboy or cowgirl doing what they love best, riding the range to put food on their tables, cutting the herds to make a check, racing out of the gate to win state, but they all have the same goal, to ride God’s gift to the cowboys and cowgirls of western life style.

  • ==============================

  • Growin’ up, lovin’ horses with a real “Old timer” that owned 13 riding stables and 2 slaughter houses and taught me that. “Them horses eat ‘fore you do”. “Pen full of horses out there. Need ridin'”. And “If it ain’t good in the stable. It’ll be good on the table

  • ==============================

  • Not to be offensive to any of you who think you are a “Cowboy” or “Cowgirl” but I agree with several posters, it doesn’t ~matter if your raising cattle in Montana or horses in Texas. You know if your life stops between February and June to make sure your foals/calves make it and you have a crop for next year. When this is the life that has been handed down to you from generations back, when you h~ave been in the hospital with your~own injuries and watched your friends and loved ones in the hospital, when the last thought before leaving the graveyard is “He is the last of a dying breed” and you know that they don’t make cattlemen and horsemen like him anymore. Then you might be what so many wanna be.

  • ==============================

  • Beer, Rum, Hat, Boots, Horse… What else does a cowboy or cowgirl want

  • ==============================

  • Size does matter! The bigger the buckle the better!

  • ==============================

  • When they lay me down to rest, put my spurs and rope upon’ my chest. Get my friends to carry me.

  • ==============================

  • OK I have to have my 2 cents in this ..Just because you wear boots and hat or if you think you have a souther~n talk doesn’t make you a cowboy or cowgi~rl. But if you ride bulls or any other event you should be considered a cowboy or cowgirl. Because in Rodeo n~ot one event is easy or not dangerous. Rodeo was made for cowboys and cowgirls so if you ride then you are one. You sure the heck don’t see city ~slickers out there riding bulls or horses.And yea cowboys and cowgirls do respect people. But not sit there and say to someone that they ain’t a cowboy or cowgirl AND THEY RIDE.

  • ==============================

  • When you’re a cowboy, life isn’t all about horses and rodeo’s. It’s about mud and dirt, and cowboy boots.

  • ==============================

  • I don’t have a quote but every one who thinks they are cowgirls or cowboys aren’t you have to be the person working hard for your animals out in a blizzard to be a cowgirl or a cowboy!! Just if you have a horse or something doesn’t mean you are a cowgirl or cowboy! So deal with it and stop saying you are a cowgirl or cowboy so shut up already.

  • ==============================

  • Always drink upstream from the herd.. And if you see a rope laying in my yard, be careful picking it up, there’s probably a horse on the other end of it.. Happy Trails.

  • ==============================

  • I am just a teenager but I agree with t~he guy who said this stuff is BS but if that guy is a real cowboy why is he on a computer I haven’t met one real cowboy that knows how to work a computer.

  • ==============================

  • Whitney it aint cowgirl up its “cowboy up” meaning quit your crying’ for girls its “cowgirls don’t cry” hence the brooks n’~ dunn song

  • ==============================

  • In every cowboys life he~ gets himself a god horse a good woman and a good loop!

  • ==============================

  • Y’all ever hear of all hat and no cattle? please! Cattle runs in my family and cowboy in my blood! you don’t learn to be a cowboy! Ya you can learn to ride and learn to drive a truck but you can never go and lea~rn to be a cowboy

  • ==============================

  • Repsonse to “I do~n’t have a quote,but I do need some help finding the meaning or the history of the phrase “A man to ride the river with”, then maybe we’ll have a quote.” Someone to ride the river with – a person to be counted on; reliable

  • ==============================

  • All a real cowboy needs is a bull, his boots and beer.

  • ==============================

  • Cowgirls lead, cowboys follow.
  • ==============================

  • Hey y’all a true cowboy is one who only talks with that accent, who wears boots with everything!, who ain’~t too rich and ain’t too poor, and who wears his wr~anglers no matter how hot it is, who can’t live without his dip, who lov~es them big trucks, who always wearing that cowboy hat even if everyone else doesn’t, A true cowboy is BORN not MADE!, and won’t ever leave the house without his hat!!! I love them southern rednecks

  • ==============================

  • Cowboys ride horses. Shouldn’t they be called horseboys?

  • ==============================

  • The history of “A man to ride the river with” comes from when Texas Rang~ers patrolled the Rio Grande on horseback guarding against outlaws ~and Indians. It, of course, meant someone you could always cou~nt on in a dangerous situation.

  • ==============================

  • Don’t drink water down st~ream from the herd.
  • ==============================

  • If I can’t do the run~ning, my horse will. If I can’t do the fighting, my horse will. My gun and horse I live for ’em.

  • ==============================

  • Before you start a conflict, make sure you know at which side your gun is.

  • ==============================

  • Well. I suppose bein’ a cowboy ain’t about something you ride or something you wear. It’s seems like its more than that. It’s about who you are deep down in your rough old boots. It’s doin’ the righ~t thing just because it’s the right thing to do, i~t’s caring about your n~eighbor more than you care about yourself, its about lookin’ at gods counrty and knowing it’s not there by chance, it’s about believin’ in something bigger than~ yourself. It’s not about showin’ off and being some kinda character, but it’s showing character when everyone else is showin’ off.

  • ==============================

  • Bein’ a cowboy isn’t something you put on in the morning or take off at night. Neither is it what you feed in the barn or ride on the trail. It’s more than that. It’s who you are deep down in your belly. Knowing how to treat folks. Carin’ more about y~our neighbor than you do about yourself because some~one else cared that way about you. Its bein’ brave enough to look at fearsome things and not back down when there’s a cause to stand y~our ground. But mostly I guess bein’ a cowboy is about having character and doin’ right when nobody’s lookin’. I’m not a cowboy because I do cowboy stuff, but rather I do cowboy stuff because I’m an old cowboy.

  • ==============================

  • A cowboy doesn’t~ ride a bull for fame he rides because he loves riding.
